The DoU team wanted a modern replacement for the gig classified websites of the past. The team wanted to make the process of finding and completing gigs streamlined, safe and secure.
The team at DoU wanted both parties to be protected from potential scammers or non-payers. On one hand, they did not want freelancers to start jobs without concrete payment. On the other, they didn’t want job posters to feel like they were being charged for an incomplete job.
We built a handshake method to protect users on both sides of the transaction. In order for the job to start after being accepted by both parties, job posters would have to explicitly click start job, causing a hold to be issued on their payment method for the amount. Only after this can freelancers start the job on their side. Once the job is completed both parties must confirm completion, causing the payment to be posted to the freelancer, completing the handshake process.
After the iOS launch, we were delighted to hear the positive feedback we were receiving from job posters and freelancers who were using the app. We continue to help our clients maintain this app, add features to it, and are working with them to create an Android version.
We played out the current gig fulfillment process to scope out the optimal user flow for the new application. We wanted the application to facilitate every part of the transaction to ensure privacy and security.
The team scoped out a job posting flow that focused on keeping the identity of the poster private until required. In-app messaging would help facilitate this, allowing for secure messaging that would not require giving up any personal information. As well, we found that in-app payment would vastly improve the gig process, allowing for a safe transaction to take place with protections in place for either party.
Once we had some core features down we focused on creating an intuitive experience for freelancers to find gigs. We explored out mapping, filtering and easy bidding to allow freelancers to easily find and apply for gigs.
The team worked on this product for over 1 year using Agile, enabling us to iteratively deliver a high-quality product in a rapidly moving space. We built the mobile app natively for iOS, integrating with Stripe to manage the payment flow. We built an advanced job fulfillment pipeline that facilitates a safe environment for both parties to talk, agree on a price and get the job done. The team tackled spam with in-app ratings and required social login for freelancers. Freelancers were given an intuitive UI to easily find gigs, talk with their clients, and get paid. We utilized Node.js and Google Cloud Platform solutions to build and host the backend infrastructure of the platform.
DoU wanted to modernize the online gig classifieds to be more safe, secure and intuitive. We researched the most popular classified forums to determine what types of jobs were being posted, how users interacted and what problems were prevalent.
We quickly found there to be major issues with spam, privacy concerns, and safety. There was a key element of trust missing on these platforms, with users taking unique steps to prevent them from being spammed or doxxed.
DoU has created a platform that modernizes the process of finding and fulfilling gigs. DoU has launched in 1 city and already captured a significant user base. The team at DoU plans to launch in other cities soon. We’re excited to continue this journey with them.
